Diminished Autonomy
An individual’s autonomy can be affected by several factors including age, cognitive impairment, illness, and treatments. An individual’s capacity to consent to a particular study should be assessed based on:
- The individual’s level of capacity, and
- The complexity and risks of the study, i.e., the capacity needed for an individual to be able to understand the study well enough to consent to participate
